The World Wide Web is, in our opinion, the most promising mechanism
for disseminating information about elder and vulnerable adult
abuse and improving the ability of professionals and the public
to help prevent abuse and respond to it appropriately when it
does happen.
Accordingly, we have attached relevant website links to nearly
every article you’ll find on this site. Oftentimes these
links are to full online copies of the reviewed resource or publication.
Therefore, please search the articles in other sections of this
website to find relevant links to the topic you are researching.
We intend that this separate “links” section will
eventually contain the most comprehensive, annotated selection
of sites relevant to elder and vulnerable adult abuse in the U.S.
We are still collecting and organizing the links we know of already,
and searching for more. In the meantime, we are posting our weekly
“featured sites” here.
Please drop us a note if there’s a website resource you’d
like to see us add here.
Substance
Abuse Resource Guide “Violence Against the Elderly”
http://www.drugs.indiana.edu/publications/ncadi/radar/rguides/MS719.html
This Center for Substance Abuse Prevention of the Substance Abuse
and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) document is
currently only available online. This guide notes that “elder
abusers are twice as likely as non-abusers to drink heavily.”
After that introduction, the Resource Guide consists of an annotated
list of publications (categorized by books; booklets, brochures,
fact sheets and reports; magazines and newsletters; videos, posters,
and other items; and studies and articles), and an unannotated
list of organizations and Internet sites. The listings are an
eclectic mix of standard and not-so-standard elder abuse references
on the one hand and substance abuse materials on the other. Many
of the elder abuse items do not explicitly address substance abuse,
and one or two of the substance abuse resources do not appear
to address elder issues. Nevertheless, if you’re looking
at the intersection of substance abuse and elder abuse, this is
a place to start. (Reviewed 1/2003)
National
Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse
http://www.preventelderabuse.org/
The National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (NCPEA)
is the leading national multi-disciplinary organization devoted
to elder abuse. Its frequently-updated website includes policy
updates; news and feature articles; discussions of “critical
issues” like the role of culture in elder abuse and neglect
and mental capacity, consent, and undue influence; what communities
can do, and much more. (Reviewed 9/11/2002)
Elder
Abuse in Residential Long-Term Care Facilities
http://finance.senate.gov/hearings/testimony/061802chtest.pdf
Catherine Hawes, Ph.D., Professor at Texas A&M University
System Health Science Center, wrote “Elder Abuse in Residential
Long-Term Care Facilities: What is Known About Prevalence, Causes,
and Prevention” to present as testimony to the Senate Select
Committee on Aging in June, 2002. This paper is formatted as a
stand-alone article, and merits inclusion in elder abuse reference
libraries because of its succinct, clear discussion of the issues.
